WHY SHOULD I HIRE A LIGHTING DESIGNER?

We recommend checking out our pages on the gift for a brief explanation of how we help you get the most out of light.  We devote every day to the pursuit of excellence in lighting design, something that no other professional can do.  We are your advocate for better light at home, and typically the only related professional on your project that does not profit if you buy more or less lighting. 

HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM A LIGHTING SHOWROOM?

Showrooms offer a wonderful opportunity to see in person a number of popular and common decorative light fixtures but are often not the place to get a lighting design.  Their business is selling lighting fixtures, while our business is helping you get the most out of light (no matter where you buy the fixtures).  We do not sell light fixtures and are not trained in sales like most showroom staff; we are trained and experienced in design.

DO YOU CHOOSE CHANDELIERS AND LAMPS?

In our Bespoke option we can help in any way you like, including choosing chandeliers, lamps, and other decorative fixtures.  At all three service levels we will specify what we call Architectural Fixtures, or those that are usually hidden like recessed downlights, steplights, under cabinet lights, and edge lighting.   To keep the costs of Accelerated and Essential services surprisingly low, we invested time and energy into building detailed buying guides that help you make informed choices.  We will tell you what size to buy, where to put it, how many lumens it should have, and related details and even show examples.  The final selection is up to you, which allows you to find just the right fixture that matches your style. 

WILL YOUR DESIGN COST ME MORE MONEY?

Lighting is often stripped of most of its functionality and nearly all of its beauty in an effort to keep bids low.  We tailor our design solutions to meet your budget, but it is not unusual for our designs to cost more than the contractor originally included.  Putting four light bulbs in the middle of the room in a single cheap fixture may be all that is budgeted, and we’re going to recommend you put those four bulbs in better fixtures spaced around the room.  That can end up requiring more fixture costs, more wire, and more labor.  The silver lining is that those extra dollars will enhance your space every single day.

WHAT IF WE HAVE QUESTIONS DURING CONSTRUCTION?

Our Accelerated and Bespoke services include time to respond to common questions during the construction process.  Time allowed varies by the service level, and more time can be purchased at our hourly rate if necessary.

WHAT IF WE WANT TO CHANGE THE DESIGN?

Our Accelerated option includes several opportunities for us to revise the design to suit your desires before we issue final construction documents (like lighting plans and fixture specifications).  In both Essential and Accelerated options, changes after final construction documents are issued may incur additional hourly rates.   If you anticipate many design changes and iterations (which is pretty unusual for us), you may want to consider our Bespoke services.

WILL YOU VISIT OUR JOB SITE?

Of course!  But…we built our Essential and Accelerated services in part because it is ridiculously expensive for us to travel to your job site, and digital technologies like 3D modeling afford us ways to visualize the space from our studio.  If you still want us to come out for a visit, contact us to make special arrangements.  Typical single-day site visits will cost in excess of $3,000 plus travel expenses from Illinois.
