We’re on a Mission

Note: I began this post in a different world, a pre-coronavirus world.  Now, as many more of us are sheltering in place, light at home is more critical than ever.  Now, as many of us face illness, the benefits of light for wellness are more important than ever.  We’re still on a mission to help.

I take my work personally.  After all, it is how I spend a great deal of my time and energy.  For most of my life, I worked because I had to, or because I liked it, or because I was good at it, or because it paid the bills, or because that’s just what everyone does.

I still do all of that.  But now I work because I am on a mission.  I have a vision for the future and visions become reality with work.

I dream of a world where all of my global neighbors enjoy the gift of light.

I believe my mission is to help others get there.

If you think that is a tall mission for one person, so do I.  That’s why I am not alone in this adventure.  I am no longer an I but a We.  Bruce. Kate. Jessica. Alessio. Mark. Karla. Mark. Adam. Ben. So many have helped or are helping.  And ours is not the only collective doing so.

Bruce encouraged me to write out a formal vision and mission and it became an engaging exercise to codify what we believe, what we are doing, what we are about.

OUR VISION: We believe light will help all the people of the world live happier and healthier lives.

If you’ve been reading the blog for long, you know that I believe light offers us at least five promises:

  • light can help us see what we’re doing so we can do it better
  • light can help us know where we are, where we are going, and who is with us
  • light can help us feel more alert, more relaxed…better at every moment
  • light can help us focus on what is important to us, light can reveal our story and values
  • light can help us adapt to changes in time, mood, task, health, and age

We believe people live happier and healthier lives when they have the benefit of all five promises.  And it’s not just a hunch, more and more legitimate scientific research studies back this up.   I can claim with reasonable certainty that if our hospitals and retirement communities and skilled care facilities had better light, there would be fewer losses from COVID-19.  That’s why we see- envision- a world with happier and healthier people through the power of light.

(I’m no megalomaniac.  Light is not the only thing we need to be happy and healthy.  Nor will light alone guarantee happiness and health.  But light can help you.)

OUR MISSION: We help global friends and neighbors by sharing our knowledge of the practical and beautiful design of light.

We want everyone, everyone, to enjoy the gift of light.  Not everyone can afford to hire us to design lighting for their home or business or place of worship.  Yes, we do charge for our services.  But there are other ways we can share, too.  This blog is one of them.

We value generosity, gratitude, equity, kindness, delight, wellness, and a blend of realism and beauty.

Sure, I think our team delivers incredible lighting design.  But that’s just a facet of our vision for the future.

We just want to help others.  We want to make the world a better place.
